My dad taught me how to call in crows when I was a teenager by hooting like an owl a few times while hidden behind a tree. Over the course of time while we were camping or deer hunting we'd hear an owl off in the distance and try to call them in. Usually it worked. We also used it to call each other when hunting. We had a certain sequence set up and it beat blowing car horns etc.
When our kids and my niece and nephews were kids I took them on a camping trip to a county park for a week or two. My mom and dad was along also. During the week the place was empty so me and dad would call in owls at night. This was right across the lake from Chuck Swan managed area. There must have been a bumper crop of young owls that year or the year before because we had a anywhere from a dozen or more right over the top of us and they sounded young. They would start hooting and sounding like monkeys yelling. Then they would be smacking their beaks. You could hear it they were so close. This happened several nights in a row.
By the weekend the place was about three quarters full and the kids wanted us to call up the owls. With all the lights and noise I said I don't think we can tonight. But I gave in and said let's go up to the end of a nearby field away from the the campground and I'll try anyway. I called a few times and nothing.
All of the sudden the owls cut loose. Not up near the edge of the woods where I was but down in the campground where we had been calling all week. People started yelling what is that what's going on and the place got quiet. We snuck back down to the camp and me and dad had a good laugh. I doubt one in 10 campers ever knew what it was.

Great story John, I think I could call them in. I've never tried, but I gonna call when I get to turkey hunting next spring. I'm just starting to turkey hunt, and I've got got all sorts of turkey call, crow, and a hoot owl call. I can sound better than the call I bought for hoot owl call to get the Tom to gobble. I enjoy all the stories that are told here. Randy

My grandpaw taught me how to hunt crows. It takes two people to hunt crows. Both walk into the woods together each carrying their shotgun.
One starts to call the crows. Then one man walks out of the woods. As the crows come in they can be picked off in the woods.
Crows can't count!!!
We never killed more than a couple a year. We'd hang them over out gardens to keep other birds away.

You can feed them meats just not processed meat like Bologna nor cornbread. One guy we knew had a pet one that flew down to our house all the time about 6 blocks away.

That would be very cool, to have a pet crow, and and another freind who had a crow who thought he was a carrier pigeon.

I think my great uncle and his friends and my dad, his brother and others were camped on a river back in late 30's. One of the guys there had a pet crow named Snowball. One of the men left a pocket watch out on a table and the crow grabbed it with it's beak and took off flying over the river. The man yelled Snowball bring that back here and Snowball's answer was Caw. LOL. Bye bye watch.

We have an over abundance of Crow in our area. Probably because of Cross Creek. And our Crow are hugh.
