Best thing I found is to yell at them if they approach too close by that I'd say less than 50 feet.. Not in a panicked yell but a loud stern yell. Next is raise your arms up and make yourself look bigger than you are. Most black bears will go away given a choice.

Best thing is to give them room. People wanting to take pictures need to use a good camera with a telephoto lens.

Yep. That's the safest way. But sometimes you do have to deal with them like when they approach you. Usually they approach for two reasons. They don't hear, smell, or see you, or they smell food. Making yourself heard takes care of the first one.

From the encounters I have had with them most just want to be left alone.

Yep except for the pesty run of the mill trail shelter moochers. One invited itself to our breakfast one morning. It got yelled at and ran off. No telling how many meals it had gotten that way. But we were also ready to run.

Yea, at the shelters it is best to take precautions and make sure food is secured and make noise.

That's a lot easier to do now. They have cages up.

Remember one smart bear at a shelter. We put the food in a duffle bag and hoisted it up on a limb. The bear climbed out on the limb and hung by it`s teeth while swatting at the bag.

Uh huh. Dats why you let it hang down a ways off the limb.

trapper, the encounter with the bear trying to get the food bag didn`t bother us. I enjoy having the bears in the mountains and have the utmost respect for them.
