No telling. Cubs are a lot of times up in trees where you can't see them but Mammy knows they are there. Could have been an innocent wrong place at the wrong time on his part. Most people who hike remote areas area a little more bear savoy than to deliberately approach one. If the foliage is anything near as dense as GSMNP you can be within a few feet of a grown bear and not know it.

They might settle down some in the next few weeks as food becomes more available..

Yea, they had some good years and their numbers grew then the droughts and lack of food hit them.

Yea me too.. It reminds me of a movie called "All the way boys" with Terrance Hill and Bud Spencer.. Bud also played Bambino in the Trinity westerns.. In this movie when he got hungry he was mean LOL..

If you can find it watch All the way boys. Hill & Spencer are South American Bush Pilots people hire to crash planes for insurance purposes. They end up stranded in the Amazon because the plane goes down too soon.
