I think the ranger has it right. Grizzly's are predators and these were hungry ones close to a food source.

Sounds like it and the food smell would still be around the camps. People pour off cooking grease etc and they smell it.

Plus if the human smell was common to her she may not have had fear of humans. No fear of humans, food smells, hungry, = fresh meat.

Yep that's right. Even though they hadn't raided any camps before I reckon they reached a break over point. Black Bears are just as capable too.

1 She was hungry
2 She had parasites and was stressed
3 She was raising three cubs
4 She was accustomed to human smell (little or no fear)
5 She smelled food

I am glad to learn that the cubs are in a zoo. I was under the impression they were put down also because of their age.

I read conflicting accounts but one said they went to a zoo. I think what it was it was assumed they were going to kill all of them and got the mama first. Looking at her they could determine if they needed to be put down or not based on stomach and chemical content.

I was under the opinion the first report said they would be put down because they were afraid the incident was imprinted on the cubs. Like you I read conflicting reports. This one conflicts with the first report on the cubs.
