Might be kids found a flare gun or the real thing. That's a lot of water area to search and currents make it more difficult.

It would made matters easier to have a Marine Band radio. But then you got to deal with drunks. I heard one clown calling a boat dock on Norris Lake on the USCG emergency channel. Evidently I was picking him up but he wasn't hitting the repeater in Knoxville for quite a while. When he did he got an ear full.

Hopefully someone know the location that the flair was fired.

If it was a barge broke loose it could be half way to New Orleans this time tomorrow. Coast Guard should have a responder I'd say. I'm not sure about Memphis but our area is head quartered out of Louisville, Kentucky. But USCG has jurisdiction from the Forks of the River above Knoxville on down stream and up to 61 bridge in Clinton on the Clinch side. Rescues are local agencies as far as I know at least down stream to Chattanooga anyway.

sent us home without going to the river so I don't know if the air unit, harbor police and/or fire boat or coast guard found anything or not

I'd hated to been in the water this time of year. You wouldn't have long to get out.
