Friday morning I shot what I thought was a spike. He was coming toward me and I shot him at 50 yards, slightly quartering toward me. I was afraid he was going to spot me on the ground, so I took the shoulder shot. While he was running through the thick stuff, I thought he was holding his front leg up. An hour after I shot, John came to me and we searched for over an hour. No blood indicating an hit and no sign to follow his travel route. I was positive I heard him crash over the knoll, but he wasn't there. After much kidding about his tracking ability (he is one of the best I've seen) and him leaving my deer so I would have to stay the night, he stopped hunting early Sat morning to give it another shot. John found the buck, which was a 3 or 4 point, depending on your definition, about 500 yards from where I shot him. Here is the strange thing; the buck was hit on his right side. The 295 gr bullet took out 3-4 ribs before breaking the opposite rear leg at the joint. There were no internal damages. Vitals and intestines were untouched. About 6-8 inches of intestines were hanging out the wound. He wasn't bloated, nor smelled. Either I pulled off on the shot, or the scope got knocked off when I dropped my rifle earlier that morning. He weighed 86 lbs dressed, and was the TWRA officer estimated him to be 2 1/2 years, a typical Chuck Swan buck.
As of 12:00 today there had been 61 deer checked in, 55 yesterday and 6 today. The largest was a 5 1/2 year old 8 point with a 23 in spread that weighed 135.
NO ACORNS. My buck stomach consisted of green grass only. B'n 5 of us, we had seen a total of 8 deer.
