I killed my 1st deer tonight at about 6:20 pm. A doe came out to the corner of my foodplot at one of the paths that lead straight to my corn pile, trophy rock, and and mineral salt lick. It was getting darker by the minute and I decided to take her, she was a yearling, although as many of you have done, I thought she was bigger than she was. She wouldn't turn, and being beside the woods lot, the light was fading fast. It was a beautiful day when I started the hunt at 4pm, but at around 5:45pm it started clouding up, and the wind started blowing, and in a few minutes it had dropped 5 degrees, and was making it dark a little early. I raised my new blind window, and picked up my Thompson Center Black Diamond Muzzle loader, loaded with 100 gr of Pyrodex Black powder and a 200 grain bullet, I raised my ML, and saw that the light was about gone. I kept waiting for a quartering shot, but she stayed her course, steadily eating the corn I have been putting out for a month now. I decided to take a head on shot, and had already ranged it at 39yds, so I got her in the crosshairs on the middle left of her mid chest, since I was shooting at a down angle of about 5 degrees, I thought it would be the right place to take out the heart and lungs. I hit her a little higher than I aimed, at her upper shoulder, and the bullet took out the heart, and exited in her right mid ribcage. It probably wasn't the text book shot to take, but she dropped like a rock, and was dead on impact. I gutted her on the tailgate of my sons pickup, so I wouldn't have to get on the ground, but it stilled hurt my back to lean over that bed. I took her to a deer processor to get my meat done. It was a great experience. I wish my grandson could have been there, but he had to go to a fall festival with his mom, at his school, but he was at the house by the time I got the doe back to the house on my 4wheeler, Both my 8 yr old, and 3 yr old grandsons was wanting to help gut the doe, and had to yell a few times to keep the youngest one from diving in hands first. It was all good till I cut into an intestine and gas smells flooded the area, but I was a trooper and did my duty, and finally got home from the processor at around 10:30pm. I'm going to see if my grandson can handle a 80 gr load of pryodex Bk powder, and if he can I will let him kill his 1st, unless a certain deer comes that I have got a look at lately, then he'll be all mine. lol I had a great day and the 1st kill jitters and all, and enjoyed every part of it. I love Muzzleloaders!! I had a blast!! Here's a few pics of the event, that will go down in infamy. Randy ;D ;D ;D ;D

Congratulations on first deer. For eating you sure couldn't have done any better. Trophy's are good for walls but like beef the younger the better the meat. Glad you got your deer.

Congratulations as that is a fantastic Deer kill and great story. If she was dead when she hit the ground then the shot was a good one. The best Elk meat I ever had was from an Elk Calf I killed many years ago. It was the most tender meat of all the Elk I have killed. Your Doe sould be real tender and great eating.

I still looking for a 10 pointer, our at least an big 8 pointer. That's what I'd like to hang on the wall. I carried my doe to Dowdy's, meat processing, and dy the time I was done I think I payed for 3 doe's with him only charging 50$ for processing, and I spent $149 before I left. Big8s, Tell Ol' Mulchay over there to let them bucks walk, and scare on over my way. I'd like to see the daddy or grand daddy to some of these button, and 5 pointer, I've seen. Is Robby the one who killed the 10 pointer!

I told my son I wanted an 8 point or better rule here, unless it was out of that deformed buck of his last year. I hope he gets a good buck this year. He was so upset when the ML he borrowed from my cousin Brian, misfired. It uses the old style primer caps, and the cap fired, but did not fire the charge of black powder. He then being inexperienced with Muzzle Loaders, reloaded the ML with a 2nd 100gr powder load, and 2nd sabot, and a fresh primer. He saw the doe again, and fired, and BOOOOOOOMMMM!! It liked to knocked him to the ground, the doe went down, and he thought he had got her, but his friend who went with him, caught up with him, and they went to check the doe out, and she ran, and he saw no blood on her, or the ground around where she laid down when she heard the awful BOOM. He learned a valuable lesson with ML'ers yesterday, and was also lucky the ML didn't blow apart!! Randy

Amen to holding on for at least a minute, that's how my TC muzzy manual tells me to handle a misfire!!

I don't know Robert. He messed us around on the jerky strips last year. He gave Lynn about 10 packs of backstrap loins along with several packages of summer sausage, salami, and bologna. All trying not to tick him off. I went to Cate's meat processing outside of Lynnville Ky. He had just closed about 5 mins before I got there. He said what ever deer you tag in with him, is the deer you take home. I don't think that happens very often at Dowdy's, and he gets a lot of donated deer there, that I believe goes in his pockets, instead of the poor, and food lockers it's supposed to! JMHO
